Most calculators start with what you can save and tell you where you end up. This one runs the other way: you say how much you need and when, and it tells you the monthly amount that gets you there. That is usually the more useful question โ a house deposit, a car, a wedding, university fees or an emergency fund all come with a number and a date attached.
What you have already saved is counted in, along with whatever it grows to on its own by the deadline. Set your country from the header and everything appears in your own currency and number system.
Under 3 years โ assume little or nothing. Keep the money in cash or a deposit. Markets can be down exactly when your deadline arrives, and a goal with a date is the wrong place to find that out.
3 to 7 years โ modest. A conservative or balanced mix. Something in the region of your local deposit rate plus a little.
Over 7 years โ you can be bolder. Long-run equity returns have historically been around 10โ12% in India and roughly 10% for the S&P 500 before inflation. Past performance is not a promise.
Try 0% once. It shows you what the goal costs with no help from returns at all โ the honest worst case, and a useful sanity check on how much you are relying on markets.
There are only three levers, and it is worth being clear about them:
1. More time. Usually the safest. Compounding does more of the work the longer it runs, and the monthly figure falls steeply โ often more than people expect for just two or three extra years.
2. A smaller target. Unglamorous but immediate.
3. A higher expected return. This is the tempting one and the dangerous one โ you are not choosing a higher return, you are choosing more risk, and the shorter the timeframe the worse that trade is.
Does inflation affect my goal? If the thing you are buying gets more expensive, yes. Run today's price through the Inflation Calculator first, then use that future figure as your target here.
What if I can increase my saving each year? The SIP calculator has a step-up field that raises the monthly amount annually โ helpful if your income is rising.
Can I share the plan? Yes โ Share Result gives a one-page PDF with the monthly figure and the year-by-year progress table.
